Born on May 30, 1932, in Mt. Vernon Illinois, Mr. Mayo went on to attend schools there until the 8th grade when, half way though, he and his family moved to Berwick. Dick finished out his secondary education at Berwick Area Senior High School, graduating in 1950. After receiving his high school diploma, he went on to college at Bucknell University for one year, and then transferred to Bloomsburg State Teachers College, now Bloomsburg University, with a major in English and Speech.

In 1951, Mr. Mayo married his wife, and current funeral home secretary, Mrs. Dolores (Eves) Mayo. During this period, he continued his pursuit of higher education while working nights at the AC&F as a time card writer, then a toolmaker. A period of seven years passed prior to Mr. Mayo’s career in the funeral industry began.

Beginning his funeral career in 1958, Dick worked for the Kelchner Funeral Home in Berwick, which he “loved.” It was then that he attended the former Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, graduating with the Dean’s Award in 1960. During that same year, he also tested for, and passed, the National Board Exam of Funeral Director’s. In 1961, Mr. Mayo passed his Pennsylvania State Board’s, which granted him his license to practice.

Three years after receiving his license, in 1964, Dick resigned from the Kelchner Funeral Home. With encouragement from a personal friend, Mr. Mayo purchased the building, which still remains the active site of Mayo Funeral Home, Inc. In 1990, he augmented the business by purchasing the former Leo J. Mikelski, Jr. Funeral Home in Shickshinny, making that a branch office of Mayo Funeral Home.

Now semi-retired, Mr. Mayo still largely participates, and plays an active role in his business. Aside from the funeral home, he is also involved with Kiwanis, a former President from 1967, and a recipient of the Legion of Honor for 41 years of service; Berwick Unico, Berwick Golf Club, and the Berwick Area Chamber of Commerce. Former memberships rest with the United Way and the Red Cross.

Born in 1965, in Johnstown, P.A., Michael attended schools in the Richland District, graduating in 1983. Following high school, Mr. Goresh attended Mount Aloysius College where he received his degree in Science in 1985. After completing a rigorous one-year enrollment at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, he was awarded his diploma in Mortuary Sciences in 1986, then, tested for and passed, the National Board Exam of Funeral Directors. Post internship of one year at the R. Owen Ketterer Funeral Home, Michael received his State Board license in 1988.

Prior to his move to Berwick in 1994, when he became supervisor of the Berwick branch of the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., Michael held employment in Richland, P.A. at the R. Owen Ketterer Funeral Home and supervisor of the Makuchan Ketterer Funeral Home in Conemaugh, PA from December of 1982 to August of 1992; the Winter Funeral Home, in Pittsburgh, P.A., from August 1985 to August 1986; and finally, in Richland, at the Harris Funeral Home from August 1992 to April of 1994.

Aside from serving the Berwick community as a funeral director, local organizations also hold Michael’s interests. He currently participates in Kiwanis as President and Past President for three (4) different terms. Mr. Goresh also maintains a seat on the board for Central Susquehanna Community Foundation, and regular membership with the Pennsylvania Funeral Director’s Association (PFDA), the National Funeral Director’s Association (NFDA), Central PA FDA, Train Collectors of America (TCA), Lionel Collectors Club of America (LCCA), the “R” Club, the Maria Assunta Society, Berwick Area Chamber of Commerce, the Berwick Golf Club, and Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church. Previous board memberships lie with the Berwick United Way and the Red Cross.

Michael resides in Berwick with his wife Rosemary, a Berwick piano instructor, a participant in the Bloomsburg University music preparatory program, and a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Berwick. They have two daughters: Jennifer and Kathryn, both of whom attend school in Berwick.

Born in 1959 in the Berwick Hospital, Dan is a native of Wapwallopen PA, and the son of Harold “Hap” and Marlene Brown Hinchcliff. He attended schools in the Greater Nanticoke Area School District, graduating in 1977 from John S. Fine High School, Nanticoke. Following high school he worked part-time at the Mayo Funeral Home in Berwick and attended Luzerne County Community College. After completing a rigorous one-year enrollment at Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, N.Y., he was awarded his diploma in Mortuary Sciences in 1981, then took and passed the National Board of Funeral Directors Exam. Following an internship of one year at the Mayo Funeral Home, Dan tested for and received his State Board license in 1982. He worked as a funeral director for the Mayo Funeral Home in Berwick from 1982 until 1990, when he became supervisor of the Shickshinny branch of the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc.

In addition to serving the Shickshinny and surrounding community as a funeral director, Dan is a founding member and member of the Board of Directors of the Shickshinny Area Business Association, a member and past president of the Twin Cities Lions’ Club of Shickshinny and Mocanaqua, a member of Knapp Lodge 462 F.&A.M. of Berwick, Berwick/Bloomsburg Royal Arch Chapter no. 218, Mt. Moriah Council No. 10 Royal & Select Master Masons of Berwick, Crusade Commandery No. 12 Knights Templar, Orangeville, and Valley of Bloomsburg Caldwell Consistory. He maintains regular membership with the Pennsylvania Funeral Director’s Association (PFDA), the National Funeral Director’s Association (NFDA), and Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association. He attends the First United Methodist Church of Shickshinny, where he serves as trustee. He also serves as deputy coroner for Luzerne County.

Dan resides in Shickshinny with his wife Marilou, a librarian/Associate Professor at Bloomsburg University, organist at First United Methodist Church of Shickshinny, and assistant organist at the First Reformed United Church of Christ in Berwick.

Born in 1987 in the Berwick Hospital Center, Andrew grew up in the West End of town, and attended Berwick schools. Following graduation from the Berwick Area Senior High School in 2005, he went on to study at Bloomsburg University, where he graduated in May of 2009 with his Bachelor of Arts in English. He received his Master of Arts in English from West Chester University in 2012, with his research focusing on Composition and Rhetoric and Writing Center Pedagogy.

Joining the staff at Mayo's in September of 2003, Andy assumed the role of the Funeral Directors' Assistant. In this role, he is responsible for assisting in managing the office, public relations, assisting with various aspects of funeral services, website management, and so forth. While away from the office, he works via email, and also shares his responsibilities with Mrs. Goresh.

Prior to his employment with the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., Andrew worked for the Joseph W. Nardi Funeral Home as a Funeral Director’s Assistant. Following his departure from the Nardi Funeral Home, Andrew also worked for—all in tandem with his position at Mayo’s—the Bloomsburg University SOLVE Office as a Student Assistant, and the McCann School of Business as an Instructor of English. Currently, though, he is also employed by Pace University as the Director of the University Writing Center, Associate Director of Composition, and an Instructor of Composition & Rhetoric.

Outside of work, Andrew serves as the Treasurer on the Executive Board of Directors for Columbia and Montour County Caring Communities for AIDS, where he also sits on their regular Board of Directors. Additionally, he serves at the Conference Co-Chair for the Mid-Atlantic Conference held at Bloomsburg University, is the former Co-Chair of the High School Conference on Diversity, and also belongs to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Berwick.

At present, Andy splits his time living part-time between Berwick and Westchester, NY.

Born in 1967 in Philadelphia, Rosemary grew up in Lancaster, where she graduated in 1985 from Lancaster Catholic High School. In 1989, she received her B.A. in Music from Millersville University, where she returned to earn her Master of Education Degree in 1992.

Rosemary has been a private piano instructor since 1984. She has taught at the Elizabethtown College Music Preparatory Program, the Pennsylvania Academy of Music in Lancaster, the Bloomsburg University Music Preparatory Program, and currently, the Bloomsburg Preparatory School of Music.

She assists her husband, Michael, as a part-time secretary at the funeral home.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, she is active as a catechist in Christian Education.

Rosemary and Michael live in Berwick with their two daughters, Jennifer and Kathryn, and their cat, Marley.

Born on February 12, 1932, in Blakely, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Mayo is a member of the Blakely High School Class of 1949.

Following high school, Dolores married Richard "Dick" Mayo on June 16, 1951.

When Mr. Mayo opened the funeral home in 1964, Mrs. Mayo began serving as the firm's secretary and cosmetic artist.  While semi-retired with Mr. Mayo, she still plays an active role in those positions today.

Mrs. Mayo and her husband reside in Berwick--just a few blocks away from the funeral home.  

Born in 1946, Gary is a lifelong resident of Berwick. He graduated from Berwick High School in 1964 and completed courses with National Drafting Institute and Cleveland Institute of Electronics.

After 48 years with Rad Woodwork Company, he retired in 2012 as General Manager.

Gary has served as an officer in the Local Chapter of the Antique Automobile Association and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Berwick Historical Society.

Gary resides on Martzville Road with his wife, Johannah. They have two children: a son, Gary Jr., a daughter, Kimberly, and five grandchildren.
