Dr. William Doyle Calley, 80, of Ferris Avenue, Berwick and Clearfield, PA, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at Clearfield Hospital.
Born April 29, 1932, in Berwick, he was the son of the late John and Catherine (Kost) Calley.
A graduate of Berwick High School class of 1950, he attended Johns Hopkins University, where he was a pre med graduate in 1954. In 1958 he received his medical degree from the University of Rochester and went on to serve his internship at the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the US Army stationed in San Diego, CA, then worked at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA, the State Health Department in Albany, NY, establishing his medical practice in 1970 in Clearfied as “William Doyal Calley, M. D., Physician for Children and Adolescents. “
Dr. Calley also took pleasure in history, politics, theology, Protestantism, and the arts. He enjoyed theatre, both in real life and on television, was an avid reader, loved music, and had a great knack for landscaping--all attributes he extended into his ministry at First Reformed United Church of Christ, Berwick, where he was a member. He encouraged dramatic presentations as a part of worship and volunteered to read Scripture during church services. He financially supported some special musical compositions for the church choir to sing, purchased new paraments for the church, and faithfully tended the church's garden beds in memory of his sister, Ellen Calley Pierce, with whom he always felt a deep connection and closeness.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Calley was preceded in death by his brother 1Lt. John Calley, Jr. (married Jane M. Letterman), killed in World War II; his sister Mary Calley Puksen (married Anthony Puksen); his brother Samuel B. Calley (married Mary R. Boyer); his sister Ellen Calley Pierce (married Edward A. Pierce, Jr.); his brother Harry J. Calley.
At the request of the deceased, private graveside services will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Rebecca Broyan, his pastor, officiating.
